The Sportscaster Cards are a
very different set of cards in that they are much larger than usual trading
cards. They were printed in several
different countries and several languages and not all subjects were printed in
every language. There were also several
print runs of some of the subjects.
This set was a mail order
subscription set issued over a three year period from 1977 to 1979. There were 91 packs issued, with 24 cards in
each pack, for a total of 2184 cards issued.
This set covers mainly sports with all the major sports along with many
minor sports being represented. If you
had purchased a subscription, each pack of 24 cards would have cost you around
$3.00.
In looking for a particular
card, the scarcity would be in this order:
Dutch, Belgian, Italian, German, French, Swedish, North American/Japan, United
Kingdom, Finnish, and North American/Italy.
Each card is numbered on the back with the country prefix, the series
number, and then the card number.
Also, many of the cards had several print runs. This
was the case for the Ben Hogan Sportscaster cards. Mr. Hogan has Sportscaster cards from 8
different countries, with more than one print run from two of these countries
for a total of 12 Sportscaster cards.
There is NO Dutch Sportscaster card or North American/Japan card for Ben Hogan.
The following pages will show
the fronts and backs of each of Mr. Hogan’s Sportscaster Cards. On the bottom row on the back, it will show
an A, B, or C if that card is a different print run.
The
only difference seen, on the front of the cards, is that some have one
box with a figure in the box while others have two boxes with figures.
These are just to the right of the Ben Hogan name.
Everything else is identical on the front of each card.
